Hi All,
Had crank, seals, and bearings plus balance, done on my crank 1000 miles ago by Stan. The right cylinder only was blowing oil from exhaust at high rpm only.On inspection found it was the right side inner that was failing. Is it normal for seals to fail after only 1000 miles? When engine is cold smoking not really noticable until hot, also no noticable loss of gearbox oil.I also noticed this seal was more moveable on the connecting shaft than the other seal.Is it possible that the seal could have moved on the shaft causing these symptoms.Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Alan

Hi there

Seals normally last for many many thousands of miles. If you aren't losing gearbox oil, then I can't see your seal being at fault - is your pump over supplying oil?

However, there is another possibility - is your crankcase seal as good as it should be? I have seen cases where the crank sucks oil from the gearbox where the sealant between the cases wasn't applied properly. The fact that this only occurs when it is hot could point this way too?? Just a thought...

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for your reply. When i assemled the crankcases i didn't use any sealant at all.I was told there wasn't a gasket between crank halves,so i cleaned the mating surfaces, tightened it up bare. That must be the answer then.Which sealant do you recommend i use? Thanks for your advice,i wouldn't have thought of that.

That is definitely your problem then! It is essential to use a good liquid gasket to seal the cases. I use a product called 'Suzuki Grey'. It is the product that Suzuki supplies to its dealers. Any good sealent would be fine but DON'T use silicon type gasket glues.
