Would it be a bad idea, to replace the nowadays hard to get crank outer bearings with a T250 main shaft bearing and seal that still are commonly available? the outer dimension is 56mm, so the crancase would have to be modified by machining 0.5 mm off the crankcase at the depth of the bearing and seal.

This is not a bad idea... BUT the line boring of the cases is a precision job and must be done to a very high level of accuracy. Many racers do this to get TZ Yamaha cranks to fit.

A much easier solution is to sleeve the crank bearing shaft and fit a different bearing. One side uses a standard Suzuki bearing, but the bearing for the other side (can't remember which is which off the top of my head) needs to be ground up to make it fit. This is how I have my race crank done.

The seals are not a problem - get some seal holders made up (see my crank on my racing page) that allow a std seal to be used. The O/D of mine are 24mm.
