In the USA, the kickstart arm must be removed for vintage racing and I understand the safety reasons for doing so. My question is whether removal of the K/S shaft is advised or not from a engine / transmission functional aspect or from a weight savings standpoint. I planned to remove the K/S shaft and associated components but leave the K/S driven gear on the countershaft. Disregard the need to seal where the K/S extends out of the case. I can easily plug this. Please advise. Thanks. |

The kickstart shaft is of no use whatsoever for racing and is just deadweight, so should be removed in its entirety. Leaving the K/S driven gear on the counter shaft is pointless. All this will do is add weight and increase friction. It is of no use and should be removed too. If you remove just the kickstart lever, you still have a useless shaft poking out where you don't want one. The casing that this shaft goes through should also be removed as it is unnecessary and slows down access to the front sprocket if you need to re-gear it at a circuit. Hope this helps |

Thanks for the advice. I'll get rid of the entire mess. Simpler is better. |
