Hi All
Few years ago I had contact with a gentleman from Germany. He owns a Seel racer build by Horst Seel and Hans Scharenberg, raced in Germany in the sixties.

I have enclosed a picture of the engine, it’s seems like this pic is from a later T250 based engine because the water pump is mounted on top on the engine. The picture of the bike to day shows it is a real T20 based engine since the Water Pump is mounted on right side on the oil pump shaft. See the links to pictures below.

I wondering – anyone heard about water cooled T20 on the track to day? And is it allowed by the CR regulation?

I doubt it would be allowed over here - engines should LOOK the same externally as they were when raced in the classic period. However, if you have pics of one being used in 1967 (the cut-off date) it would be a different argument.

I'm not sure how much benefit water cooling would be really though on a T20. Some guys over here have managed to get 60BHP plus from a T20 but the limiting factor is the CRANK, rather than the heat.

Gregg Bonelli who races T20's in the States says he brought a watercooled T20 motor from the Uk some years ago. He thinks it was from Shepard who I know was well known for making barrels and heads and tunning two strokes. I am sure he made 'TR' type heads for the T20 as I saw a pair on a T20 at Darley Moor in the mid eighties (with standard barrels). Gregg said the engine was not much use due to the use of a thermal siphon means of moving the water around the barrels as aposed to a water pump. Whether any more were made, raced in the UK and before 1967 would be interesting to know.
Adrian, on the question of cranks, are the new four bearing cranks not able to manage 60bhp? I thought that was the reason they were made due to the stock cranks not being up to the job. What is their limit?

The 4 bearing crank is fine for 60bhp, but ... (although this is a converted standard t20 crank, not a 'new' crank) ... only IF you can get that kind of BHP at a reasonable rpm. You can then do a season's racing (but no more!) on one crank rebuild.
However, the problem occurs when you start revving too high. Mine peaks out at about 10500rpm which is fine. However, people have tuned them to rev as high as 12500rpm (or higher!) and that is when the t20 crank gives up.
Euan Hamilton has sent me dyno figures for a T20 that produced over 60bhp, but he was revving it to near 13000rpm and the crank couldn't cope - he is now looking at getting a crank made from scratch!!
This years CRMC 250 twin championship winner, Karl Hayes, has a T20 that revs to 12500rpm (I just can't catch him on the straight bits) - but he has fitted a TZ crank to his bike.

My 4 bearing crank has worked well this year, although at Snetteron it went slightly out of balance when I oiled a plug, and then the crank pin sheared at Donnington on the last day of the season!

I'm presently looking at fitting an RD350LC crank to my bike. My tuner and new crank builder, Lea Gourlay, says it will be quite easy to get it done. In the past Nova Racing have made primary gears to fit the LC crank to the T20 straight-cut clutch gear and are going to make some more up after I ordered one from them recently.

I'll keep you posted....

And can get nowhere near him on the curves either. Hahahahaha
