What is the most common indication that the crank seals are shot? is it blowing a smokesceen out of one cylinder,or no idle,or what? |

Hi there Poor tick-over can be caused by many different things and isn't really an indication of leaking crank seals (although it COULD be the cause). Generally the bike will start to burn oil heavily from one cylinder as oil from the gearbox is drawn into the crankcase area. If you check your gearbox oil level afer a long run and it has gone down - your seals have definitely gone (assuming you don't have an oil leak) I hope that this is of some help Adrian (If anyone else wants to add a comment on this, please do so) |

Read your spark plugs! If you blow a seal on the tranny side the oil that is drawn in will burn in the combustion chamber causing the plug to get black and tar-like with heavy carbon buildup.Lots of blue smoke! If the seal on the ignition side blows, the engine will suck air making your fuelmixture leaner. The plug would be on the "chalky" side. Good Luck! T. |
