Is it usual to modify the swing arm longer than the original? What's the benefit in doing this?

Depends how tall you are, and what type of circuit you are going to race on. On very fast road circuits such as the Isle of Man, the longer wheelbase makes the bike more stable. For short circuit racing, and a small rider, it may well not be worth doing. I'm 6' 2 inch tall, and as the t20 is SO small, the added length helps with stability. I know shorter riders who never bothered.
