Has anyone tried Dellorto carburettors, for example PHBH 28 BS or PHBE 30 HS? Why just Mikunis, why not Dellortos?

Dellortos PHBH suffered from a bad reputation in England, because the first batch to arrive there was faulty. The Ones you can buy now still have a problem because they don't flow enough fuel as what they're supposed to. You need to blueprint them.
Otherwise, they should be fine, shouldn't they?

I suppose you can't use Mikunu TMX because of the shape they have (square, non period look) but these are truly the best carb for acceleration.

I'm only curious - I'll certainly use Mikunis (VM). True, I don't know yet what would be the right diameter. I have Swarbrick exhausts but original cylinders (because I want to test the gearbox etc. before getting cylinders and heads tuned). Perhaps VM 26 or 28, what do you think?

If you want your engine tuning, you need to speak to Lea Gourlay, he's a top racer and what he doesn't know about tuning and preparation isn't worth knowing.
He can, without really trying, get a T200 Invader (X5) to produce 37 hp. (And still be reliable).

Tuning is OK in the future but the problem is now: which Mikunis VM (diameter?)with the standard cylinders and Swarbrick exhausts? I think 30 mm is too big in this case even if it's suitable later, with a good engine tune.

Why waste time and money on standard cylinders and carbs, only to have to buy some different carbs later on?
30mm is the way to go for short circuit racing, on tuned barrels.

I would for a start (based on my experience tuning Lambrettas to the tittys) start with the standard carb, rejetted and the pipes.
Big carbs only work with porting and tuning and don't even need to be that big.
That was a thing of the 80's. Nowadays, you should get much better running with a slightly smaller carb than what you think.

A lot of people run 250 twins on 32mm carbs, particularly in the Manx GP where top speed is more important than acceleration. So 300 mm IS smaller than you could have!

Oops! I meant 30mm, not 300mm!

Adrian,
you're talking about the Manx GP and Jaak just wants to test drive his motor. Hence my plea for standard carbs, rejetted. It's cheaper, innit?
Jaak,
I hope you have rebuilt your engine and that you are not trying to tune a untouched motor.
That's just plain dangerous.
